Addiction is common and often leads to harmful consequences, with profound effects on the person, their family, community and society. It is important to assess for substance misuse disorders and non-drug addiction, as there are evidence-based biopsychosocial interventions that improve outcomes in these groups of patients.
The full day course, led by Drs Soraya Mayet & John Barker who are Consultant Addiction Psychiatrists, will describe common substance misuse disorders including alcohol, opiates and commonly used club drugs such as novel psychoactive substances, alongside non-drug addiction and in particular gambling disorder and related harms. The session will provide attendees with skills in assessing and diagnosing these common presentations and provide guidance in the specialist biopsychosocial management interventions for addictions.
After attending this course delegates will be able to:
1. Develop an understanding of the presentation of common substance misuse disorders and non-drug addictions
2. Feel confident in completing thorough assessments of common substance misuse disorders and non-drug addictions
3. Be aware of the biopsychosocial management options for non-specialist and specialist management of common substance misuse disorders and non-drug addictions
This course is aimed for Consultants, Higher Trainees, Specialty Doctors & GPs and is eligible for 6 CPD points.
