Book EventDeaf children and young people are more likely to experience mental health and behavioural challenges, not because they are deaf, but due to systemic factors and environmental influences. These challenges often stem from language/communication barriers, a lack of accessible services, and the fact that many issues remain unrecognised or masked. Deaf CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) is a specialist service created to address these concerns, recognising the unique needs of this population.
This day conference will explore the key factors affecting the mental health of deaf children and young people, along with strategies for effectively supporting and working with them.
The conference will introduce Deaf CAMHS and its approach to supporting deaf children and young people. Topics covered will include mental health issues in deaf children and young people, neurodevelopmental assessments tailored for this group, the impact of language deprivation, therapeutic interventions, and practical guidance on working with interpreters.
After attending this course, delegates will be able to:
• Understand some of the underlying causes of mental health and behavioural issues in deaf children, as well as the systemic and environmental factors involved.
• Gain insight into specialist assessments and interventions for deaf children and young people.
• Learn effective approaches for working with BSL/English interpreters, as well as key considerations when working with deaf children.
