Section 117 Mental Health Act 1983 - Why is it so complicated & how to get what the patient needs?

Services that can be provided under S117 after care are not clearly defined and do not specifically mention accommodation required. However, in most clinical situations a supportive accommodation is what is identified as the service required for after care to prevent relapse. Led by Dr Nagulan Thevarajan, Medical Member of the First-tier Tribunal, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, this talk is about how to integrate the thinking between clinical and social care colleagues to get what the patient needs. We do this by looking at the definition of the law, various case laws relevant to this topic and how to keep abreast of the ever changing landscape of commissioning requirements across agencies.

After attending this course delegates will learn...

  • What is after care?
  • How does it look from social care point of view?
  • How does it look from a clinical perspective?
  • Will the commissioning landscape change any of the above?
